Es el Director de Neue Materialien Bayreuth GmbH, una institución de I + D del estado bávaro en el campo de materiales y procesos para polímeros, materiales compuestos y metales. Es catedrático de Materiales Poliméricos del Departamento de Ingeniería de Polímeros de la Facultad de Ciencias Naturales Aplicadas (FAN) de la University of Bayreuth, en Bayreuth, Alemania y Jefe de departamento de Ingeniería de polímeros de TuTech Innovation GmbH, en Hamburgo, Alemania. Es graduado en Física y con doctorado (Dr.-Ing.) del departamento de Ingeniería Mecánica de la University of Kassel, en Kassel, Alemania.

Su grupo se dedica a la investigación científica e industrial orientada en el área de materiales poliméricos. Coautor de 5 patentes y de varias publicaciones.

He is the current CEO of Neue Materialien Bayreuth GmbH, a Bavarian state R&D-institution in the field of materials and processes for polymers, composites and metals. Since 1995 he has been Full Professor for Polymers in Mechanical Engineering and head of the Department of Polymers and Polymer Composites at the Technical University Hamburg-Harburg, Germany and since 2000 he is Full Professor of the Department of Polymer Engineering in the Faculty of Engineering (ING.) at the University of Bayreuth, Germany. He made his university studies in Physics and earned his Ph.D. degree (Dr.-Ing.) to the department of Mechanical Engineering in Kassel, Germany (supervisor Prof. Dr.-Ing. Ehrenstein), in 1987. The research group of Volker Altstädt is dedicated to scientific and industrial oriented research in the area of polymeric materials, establishing a connection between the natural sciences and engineering technology. He is co-author in 5 patents and several papers.
